We are just three hours from the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan area, and two hours from Boston. < back to top HOW DO YOU SELECT THE STAFF? Mah-Kee-Nac has a large returning staff each summer. These include both our senior staff and our bunk/specialty counselors. When hiring our staff, we look for young adults who exemplify a wholesome role model for your children. We recruit our staff members from colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Each counselor must go through a rigorous application process, which includes a personal interview and reference check. The average age of our staff is 21 years old, and our counselors must have completed at least their freshman year in college. We maintain a 3:1 camper to counselor ratio at Mah-Kee-Nac to insure safety and supervision at all times. We offer excellent instruction, as all of our bunk counselors specialize in a particular activity. < back to top WHAT ARE THE SESSION CHOICES? Mah-Kee-Nac operates for 7 weeks. Families can choose 7, 6, 4, or 3 week sessions. Campers can extend their 3 or 6 weeks during the summer, if space is available. < back to top WHERE DO CAMPERS COME FROM? Mah-Kee-Nac boys come from all over the United States. We have campers from New York, New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Florida and as far away as Texas and California. Many of our campers are children of Mah-Kee-Nac alumni. < back to top DO YOU HAVE TO BE A GREAT ATHLETE AND COMPETITOR TO SUCCEED AT MAH-KEE-NAC? Mah-Kee-Nac's program is designed to enable every boy to feel successful. We always say, "You have to like sports to come to Mah-Kee-Nac, but you don't have to be a great athlete". Our program allows campers with diverse athletic ability to grow and learn new skills throughout the summer. We don't have tryouts or "A" and "B" teams. Every boy has the opportunity to participate in inter-camp games throughout the summer. Clinics and special tournaments allow campers to specialize in a number of activities including baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, lacrosse, water-skiing, sailing and cycling. It is our philosophy to concentrate on skill building, teamwork and professional instruction. < back to top WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE OFFERED OTHER THAN SPORTS? Mah-Kee-Nac is known for offering a well-rounded program. Activities on our waterfront, the famous Stockbridge Bowl, include: water skiing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Boys swim at the lake as well as in our heated olympic size pool. In our Media Center, campers actively participate in our camp radio station, newspaper, and photography studio (digital and black and white). Mah-Kee-Nac provides campers the opportunity to express their individual artistic interests through our Arts and Crafts studio, Woodshop, model rocketry, and drama programs. Other popular activities at Mah-Kee-Nac include: archery, ropes and climbing wall, putting green and state-of-the-art driving range, cycling, nature, outdoor camping and hiking. Having over 30 different activities gives each boy the chance to explore new things and specialize in activities he enjoys most. < back to top DO CAMPERS HAVE ANY CHOICE PERIODS IN THE DAILY SCHEDULE? HOW IS THE PROGRAM DESIGNED? Each camper at Mah-Kee-Nac has choice in the daily schedule. Our younger boys (finishing 1st through 4th grade) have a limited amount of choice, as we want them to take advantage of everything the camp has to offer. Senior campers (finishing 5th through 9th grade), have an individual choice-based program. All boys are required to have a full schedule, but choice gives them the opportunity to focus on and enjoy their favorites activities. The program provides boys with diverse abilities and interests the opportunity to thrive. < back to top WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF MY CHILD IF HE GETS SICK OR IS INJURED? Mah-Kee-Nac's health care staff consists of five nurses and a physician that cover our health center seven days a week and 24 hours a day. During orientation the staff reviews each of our camper's medical history and medications. Sick call is held after breakfast and dinner, but campers who are ill are immediately escorted to the health center by their counselor. Children receive routine medications at mealtime and bedtime according to the documentation on the health history. Local physicians attend to campers who need to see a specialist. These doctors are affiliated with the Berkshire Medical Center, 15 minutes from camp, which is a teaching hospital of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Parents are always called when a child stays overnight in the health center, needs to see a specialist, or needs to be started on prescription medication. We also contact parents, or the emergency contact person, immediately in the event of an accident or injury. In addition, our campers are checked weekly by our nursing staff to insure hygiene and health is maintained satisfactorily. < back to top ARE THERE SOCIALS WITH GIRLS FROM NEARBY CAMPS? Throughout the summer regular socials are held with our sister camp Danbee, as well as other girls' camps in the Berkshires. Our older boys also take trips to New Hampshire for inter-camp games. The number and format of the socials depends on the camper's age. < back to top HOW IS THE FOOD? OUTSTANDING! Mah-Kee-Nac's menu is designed to appeal to boys. Our chef, a culinary arts teacher from Kansas City and his students provide a large variety of nutritious and well-prepared meal selections, and alternatives are available at every meal. A full salad bar along with hamburger, hotdog or pasta entrees cooked to order are offered at both lunch and dinner. Snacks during the day, and at bedtime include fresh fruit, home made cookies and ice-cream novelties. We are a NUT AWARE facility and do not use any nut products in our meals. PS. The KC BBQ Night is awesome! < back to top HOW DO THE BOYS GET TO CAMP? Bus transportation is available from North & Central New Jersey, Long Island, New York City, Westchester, Philadelphia and Boston. Our counselors escort campers on flights from Washington, DC and Florida. A member of our senior staff meets boys at the Albany and Hartford Airports. < back to top WHAT ABOUT PHONE CALLS AND MAIL? Parents may call their sons at specified times twice during the summer. Each boy is required to write home at least three times per week, and we ask parents to write almost every day. If you ever have a question or concern, parents are encouraged to call one of the directors anytime throughout the summer. < back to top WHAT DOES MAH-KEE-NAC DO TO MAKE BOYS FEEL WELCOME? One of our directors meets every boy who is planning to attend Mah-Kee-Nac. Spending time with our campers in their home environment assists us in getting to know each boy and contributes to his adjustment to camp. We also host a new camper luncheon held in May at a New York Metropolitan Area hotel. < back to top HOW ARE THE GROUPS ORGANIZED? Camp Mah-Kee-Nac is divided into three separate camps: Junior Camp (boys finishing 1st through 4th grade), Lower Senior Camp (campers finishing 5th and 6th grades), and Upper Senior Camp, (boys completing 7th, 8th & 9th grades). An experienced Head and Assistant Head Counselor supervise each of these smaller camps. In addition, each age group has a group leader in charge. Our bunks average ten campers and three counselors. Camp activities are scheduled so that boys play and compete with only boys in their age group. We do many all-camp activities throughout the summer that bring the entire camp together. These activities include: Camp Olympics, Camp Sing, July 4th Talent Show, Carnival and many evening programs. < back to top HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT CAMP MAH-KEE-NAC? We encourage all new families to meet with a Mah-Kee-Nac director and make their decision during the Fall while space is still available. If you are looking for the following summer, we suggest you visit camp while it is in session. We offer weekend tours and Mini-Rookie days (10:30 AM to 1:00 PM) where boys get a chance to participate in camp activities with other prospective campers. Parents tour camp and meet with the directors while their children participate in Rookie activities. Once you decide Mah-Kee-Nac is the place for your son, return the enrollment form, and we will be in touch with all the pertinent information regarding transportation, visiting days, trips, clothing and other pre-camp information.
