STAFF FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Where is Camp Mah-Kee-Nac located? What is the weather like? What should I bring to wear? Is there a "Dress Code" at Mah-Kee-Nac? Does camp provide transportation to places? Where will I be living? Can I use the camp facilities? How are travel arrangements made? How will I be reimbursed? Where is Mah-Kee-Nac's "Sister Camp" Danbee? What will my daily schedule look like? Will I get time off? Is there a nightly curfew? What kind of personal items are appropriate to bring? WHERE IS CAMP MAH-KEE-NAC LOCATED? Camp is located in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains, just over two hours west of Boston and roughly two and a half hours north of New York City. The town of Lenox is just over a mile away, and like many area towns, is rich as a summer performing arts and artisan community. < back to top WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE? Expect the temperature to range from 72-85 degrees Fahrenheit (22-30 Celsius). There can be stretches that are warmer, but typically it is a moderate to warm environment. While "it never rains at Mah-Kee-Nac", we do get occasional precipitation, so you'll want to bring raingear. < back to top WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO WEAR? Camp is a very casual place - bring what is comfortable and functional. You may want to bring "out of camp clothes" for evenings out and days off. A hat is always a good idea when you're spending so much time outdoors. Remember that we are working with kids - clothes with alcohol or suggestive logos are not appropriate for our environment. < back to top IS THERE A "DRESS CODE" AT MAH-KEE-NAC? Over the past seventy five years, Mah-Kee-Nac has developed a reputation as a "clean cut" environment. Staff need to comply with our parents expectations and arrive at camp with appropriate hair length and no piercings. Facial hair is also not allowed, other than a well trimmed mustache. Let us know if you have a problem with these policies so there isn't an unexpected problem upon your arrival. We always bring in a barber/stylist for those who wish to go with a "lower maintenance" hair style before camp starts. < back to top DOES CAMP PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION TO PLACES? During most days, our camp transportation is fully utilized transporting campers, so generally camp vans are not available for staff use. When vans are available during evening hours, we try to give staff the option to leave camp and will have one of our key staff members drive to one of several destinations. < back to top WHERE WILL I BE LIVING? All counselors live in a bunk with campers, generally with 3 counselors in a bunk with 8-10 campers. You will be assigned to one of three campuses: Junior Camp (Campers 8-10 years old), Lower Senior Camp (Campers 11-12 years old), or Upper Senior Camp (Campers 13-15 years old). During staff orientation we will be evaluating staff to place them on the best campus to ensure an enjoyable summer for you and your campers. Also, during orientation you will have the opportunity to give us your preference, but remember we have the final say based on many factors. < back to top CAN I USE THE CAMP FACILITIES? Camp facilities are open to staff as long as they are not affecting camper's activities. Any period off or evening, facilities are open. The hockey rink, tennis courts and basketball courts are lit for night use, plus the Fieldhouse (indoor gymnasium) and weight room is open every evening until midnight. < back to top HOW ARE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS MADE? We will be providing detailed information regarding travel in our Staff Bulletin. This will include how to make your travel arrangements and more. < back to top HOW WILL I BE REIMBURSED FOR MY TRAVEL ALLOWANCE? You can get half of your travel allowance upon your arrival at camp, with the other half in your last paycheck, or just wait until the end of camp to receive it all. < back to top WHERE IS MAH-KEE-NAC'S "SISTER CAMP" DANBEE? Contrary to popular belief, Camp Danbee is not "across the lake" - but 35 minutes away from us - we will see Danbee a lot through scheduled social events. < back to top WHAT WILL MY DAILY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE? It depends on what campus you are assigned to, but in general there are five activity periods in a day. Counselors work four and have one period off when possible. After dinner there is an evening activity that requires your planning, participation or supervision. On Special Event Days, you'll be asked to pitch in and help prepare for both campus and all camp special events. < back to top WILL I GET TIME OFF? All staff will get one day off per week, with the exception of the first week that campers are there. This will total five days off during the summer. There will also be one early evening out per week. Note that on normal evenings out of camp there is a 1:00 AM curfew - staff need to check in to ensure all bunks are covered by adults. < back to top IS THERE A NIGHTLY CURFEW? Yes. All bunk staff are required to check in every night at 1:00 AM. The 1:00 AM curfew helps us to assure that all counselors are safely back at camp and all bunks have a staff member in them. < back to top WHAT KIND OF PERSONAL ITEMS ARE APPROPRIATE TO BRING? There isn't a lot of personal space in a bunk situation, so keep it small and efficient! Also remember that camp is an open community - while we trust each other, it is a good idea not to bring a lot of valuable personal items with you. We will provide a safe place for your valuables and cash in our staff lounge. Feel free to contact us if you have questions or would like more information about Camp Mah-Kee-Nac. < back to top |
