You Know Camp Will Be Great for Your Child – So Why Is Enrolling So Hard?

Rachel ChadwinMar 09, 2026

Many parents begin their search for summer camp with confidence. They know camp builds independence, friendships, and resilience. They believe the experience will be good for their child.

In fact, many families start researching sleepaway camp for the first time because they want their child to grow.

But when it’s finally time to enroll, something changes.

The question suddenly becomes personal:

What if my child can’t do it?
What if the homesickness is too much?
What if they ask to come home?

That hesitation is incredibly common—and completely understandable.

The Problem Isn’t That Parents Don’t Believe in Camp

Most parents DO believe in camp. What makes the decision difficult is imagining your own child facing something hard, especially being away from home for the first time.

Parents worry about homesickness at camp. They wonder how their child will handle the unknown.

But after working with campers and families for decades, we’ve learned something important:

Kids are far more capable than we often think.

The Proof Is Everywhere

We regularly speak with parents who went to camp themselves in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of them tell the same story:

“I was incredibly homesick when I went to camp; I cried every day.”

Yet today they’re thriving adults—confident, successful, raising families of their own.

Their homesickness didn’t define them. It didn’t last forever.

What they remember most is realizing they could get through something difficult.

That realization—I can do hard things—is one of the most valuable outcomes of the camp experience.

A Helpful Mindset Shift

Many parents spend months asking:

Can my child really handle sleepaway camp?

But there’s a more helpful question to ask:

“How can I help set my child up for success?”

That shift changes everything.

Instead of focusing on the fear, parents can focus on preparation—talking about homesickness, normalizing nervousness, and helping their child understand that feeling uncertain is part of trying something new.

Because confidence isn’t built by avoiding challenges.

Confidence grows when kids discover they can overcome them.

Why Camp Matters

Sleepaway camp is more than a few weeks of summer fun. It’s a meaningful step toward independence.

Campers learn to try new activities, navigate friendships, solve small problems on their own, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had.

By the end of the summer, many leave camp feeling stronger and more confident than when they arrived.

The Mah-Kee-Nac Experience

At Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, helping boys grow in confidence and independence has been at the heart of our community since 1929.

Our experienced staff understands that the first days of sleepaway camp can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. That’s why we focus on creating a welcoming environment where campers quickly feel supported, build friendships, and discover their place within the camp family.

Just as important, parents need to feel confident in the adults who are guiding their children through those first steps away from home. At Mah-Kee-Nac, our counselors and leadership team take that responsibility seriously. Our staff are not only trained to support campers through homesickness and new experiences, but also to help each boy feel safe, encouraged, and cared for every day he’s at camp.

Over the course of the summer, something special happens. Campers who may have arrived unsure begin to realize just how capable they are.

The strange little truth of camp psychology is this: parents often need the same reassurance their kids do. Both are standing at the edge of something new, wondering if it will work out.

And most of the time, it does beautifully.

For nearly a century, that journey has been unfolding each summer at Mah-Kee-Nac—making summers extraordinary since 1929.
