End of Session One
A big week at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, as session one came to a touching close.
Our four-weekers savored the final days of sleepaway camp – playing Tramp Ball, baseball and basketball, paddle boarding, jumping in the lake, competing with other camps, huddling up by the fire, and much more.
After the parents departed on visiting day, the camp held a rousing lip-sync battle. Campers dressed up and memorized lyrics to some of their favorites songs including Shotgun, Riptide, September by Earth Wind and Fire (nice to hear some classics), and even Hava Nagila. It’s always a pleasure to see the kids jump right back into fun, camper-comradery, even after saying goodbye to mom and dad (they may have been a bit hyped up from the candy deliveries…)
One of the favorite events this week was the co-ed swim meet, in which multiple boys, girls, & coed camps came to MKN to compete. We were so proud of our MKN boys, who came in first place! Freestyle, backstroke, medleys, and butterfly, these swimmers absolutely killed it. So many kids wanted to participate that we had a second team, and they came in third place! Which means we held two of the top three spots. Most importantly, the kids had fun and were super proud of their accomplishments, both individually and as a team.
In other water sports, our sailing team attended their first regatta, which took place at Camp Lenox, and they had an excellent day – coming in fourth place out of eleven camps.
Minis and Bigs
The Mini-Maks thoroughly enjoyed their one-week introduction to sleepaway camp in the Berkshires. They learned a lot from their counselors, and their Brave (CIT) Buddies. The Braves are C.I.T.s (Counselors in Training), and are in a program that takes place the year after their last summer as a campers -their Seneca summer. Now that the Braves have completed leading the Mini Mak week (for boys entering first through fifth grade), they are headed to Hawaii!
Founders Cup – our ongoing, full-camp competition, came to a dramatic close at the end of the week. The four teams battled it out in the final relay, and team Metzger took home the big prize.
We ended session one with the annual Camp Sing, in which every age group writes lyrics about camp set to a song of their choice, and perform the production in front of the whole camp. They also paint a plaque with their tribe name that symbolizes their camp experience. The big winners were Mohican, who sang a song to “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers, and Algonquin who sang a song to “Take Me Home, Country Road” by John Denver.
Another stellar week with a spectacular group of boys fully embracing life at sleepaway camp!
That’s all for now. More next week from your MKN Directors…
All our best,
