Through Their Eyes: What Families Value Most About Mah-Kee-Nac

Rachel ChadwinSep 27, 2026

We spend a lot of time talking with parents before their sons come to Mah-Kee-Nac. They want to know about the activities and the bunks, of course. But the questions underneath are usually more personal: Will he find his people? Will someone really get to know him? Will he be happy there?

Those are the questions we would ask, too. So when parents tell us what camp has meant to their family, we listen closely. Here are a few themes we hear again and again.

The Camp Mah-Kee-Nac Culture: Inclusion & Kindness

Parents have told us they value the feel of Mah-Kee-Nac the most.   They can see and feel our culture in the way a bunk welcomes someone new, the way boys cheer each other on, and the way a counselor notices when someone needs a little extra support. Kindness and inclusion aren’t separate from the fun here. They’re part of what makes boys feel free to jump in and be themselves.

Finding His People

Parents tell us about friendships their sons made at camp and kept throughout the school year. Most of our boys arrive knowing no one.  There’s something special about the friendships built while sharing a bunk, trying new activities, and going through all the wonderfully ridiculous moments of a camp summer together.

One parent told us her son starts talking about next summer as soon as he gets off the bus. We love that. He’s excited for the activities, but he’s also thinking about the friends waiting for him when he arrives!

The Kind of Community They’re Growing Up In

Many parents described the Mah-Kee-Nac campers as “kind, welcoming, friendly kids.” That meant a lot to us, because our culture is shaped by the boys as much as it is by the adults.

We talk about kindness, inclusion, and looking out for one another. Then we get to see those values in action: a boy making room for someone new at the table, an older camper encouraging a younger one, or a bunk cheering on a friend who decided to give something a try. These are small moments, but they are a big part of what makes MKN feel like MKN.

Exploring Diverse Summer Camp Activities for Boys

We love hearing what boys discover when they have the freedom to choose how to spend their days. One family shared that their son came to camp loving tennis, then went home excited about chess and lacrosse, too.

Sometimes a boy finds a new favorite activity. Sometimes he surprises himself by sticking with something that felt hard at first. And sometimes the best part is the friend he made while trying it. Parents notice that their sons come home with more than stories about what they did. They come home with a better sense of what they enjoy and what they can do.

Knowing Their Son Is Known

This is the part of a parent’s feedback we take most personally. Families tell us when a counselor really understood their son, when someone gave him the encouragement he needed, or when a conversation with our team helped them feel at ease.

We’re involved in camp every day because the details matter. We want to know the boys beyond their names and bunks, and we want parents to feel they can come to us with a question or concern. When a family tells us their son felt comfortable being himself here, we know how much trust sits behind those words.

The Benefits of Sleepaway Camp for Boys

Parents often tell us about changes they notice after camp. A little more confidence. More willingness to speak up. The pride that comes from trying something new or getting through a tough day. One parent shared that her son had proved to himself he could do hard things. We think about that often.

Of course, boys also come home with camp songs stuck in their heads, stories that take a while to tell, and plans to see their friends. All of that matters, too. It’s a joy to hear that they had fun. It means even more to hear how the summer stays with them.

We’re grateful to the parents who share these stories with us. They help other families imagine what a summer at Mah-Kee-Nac might feel like for their own son, and they remind us why we care so much about getting the little things right.
